Ballantrae Neighborhood

Ballantrae is a Scottish themed neighborhood in the Birmingham area. Located in Pelham, Alabama, it was built in 2003 and the neighborhood is still building. While Ballantrae is located in Pelham it is also close to Alabaster and Chelsea.

Ballantrae can be accessed through the Weatherly and Olde Weatherly neighborhoods. The neighborhood is spread over four and half miles. This neighborhood is known for its championship 18 hole golf course and the grand Scottish Clubhouse.

Where is Ballantrae?

Ballantrae is located east of I-65 in Pelham, twenty-five miles south of Birmingham. Pelham is located in the Greater Birmingham area, which is one of the most populated cities Alabama. Pelham is located in Shelby County. The entire neighborhood of Ballantrae has a 35124 zip code.

Since the neighborhood is located behind Weatherly and Olde Weatherly neighborhoods, Ballantrae is a peaceful area where residents can relax and unplug from city life. The drive through the neighborhood includes hills and plenty of trees that make it seem like you are headed to a country destination.

But while Ballantrae may feel remote, it close to shopping and restaurants. The Colonial Promenade Alabaster is a shopping center conveniently located to Ballantrae and Olde Weatherly residents. At the entrance of Weatherly there are also some shops and restaurants for residents to enjoy.

School Zones for Ballantrae

All of Ballantrae is zoned for Pelham City schools. There are two K-5 schools: Pelham Oaks Elementary School and Pelham Ridge Elementary school. The middle school is Pelham Park Middle School and the high school is Pelham High.

Life in the Neighborhood

According to a poll on Nextdoor, the residents of Ballantrae love the neighborhood because it is quiet, safe, beautiful, well maintained, peaceful, family friendly, and has good neighbors.

Although Ballantrae is a large neighborhood, the community is still very close. The neighborhood has many events including golf events at the course, Easter egg hunts, and visits from Santa on Christmas Eve by Fire Station 5’s fire truck! Ballantrae even has its own magazine for residents to enjoy.

The golf course at Ballantrae was designed by Bob Cupp, an internationally known architecture. The ClubHouse is a Scottish themed castle and is also the inspiration for the neighborhood.

The Ballantrae Golf Course is an 18 hole, semi-private course, and has won many awards. The course is a par 72 with 7,310 yards. An entire game should take around four hours to complete. You can do more than golf when you visit the Ballantrae Golf Course. The ClubHouse has a conference room, golf shop, and even a restaurant called the Fireside Grill. The Fireside Grill serves breakfast and lunch and has a Ballantrae Saturday Breakfast Buffet!

The Neighborhood Pool

Ballantrae’s pool is wheelchair accessible and Junior Olympic sized. The pool is also located next to Fire Station 5. It boasts a Scottish pavilion that the residents can use or rent out for parties.

Ballantrae is also home to Pelham Fire Station 5, the neighborhood’s Scottish fire station!  

Ballantrae Fitness Center

At the entrance of Ballantrae you can find the fitness center. It is the first Scottish building that greets you at the bottom of the hill as you drive into Ballantrae. Although with all the hills located in the neighborhood, you can get a good workout even without heading to the fitness center!

Homes in Ballantrae

Ballantrae has over 900 homes and counting! The house builds include Scottish inspired castles, garden homes, and English tudors. The neighborhood is expanding as of 2019, so new construction is also an option to be a part of Ballantrae.

The neighborhoods inside of Ballantrae are given their own names and each neighborhood, still inspired by a Scottish theme, have a similar square footage and price range.

Here are a list of shops and restaurants located at the entrance of Weatherly:

Joe’s Italian, Blair-Pharmacy, Weatherly Animal Hospital, Park Place Cleaners, Turner Tax of Alabaster, and Jac & Dac Kidz Corner.

There’s a lot to offer outside of the surrounding areas of the neighborhood. Downtown Birmingham is only twenty-five miles North of Ballantrae. Oak Mountain State Park is close to Ballantrae. Many people go to Oak Mountain State park to camp, bike, and hike, and Oak Mountain even has its own golf course!

Pelham also has a lot to offer. There is an ice skating rink, racket club, recreational club, and a Wildlife Refuge Center. Since Ballantrae is conveniently located off of I-65, it’s quick and easy to go anywhere. Ballantrae is the perfect getaway from the business of the Greater Birmingham Area without sacrificing a faraway location.
